Regarding your question: How would you handle it if you need to combine many of the mentioned elements in the Pagination approach?

yep - worst case scenario, you would get a long bar of elements. Luckily, I can't think of many scenarios where you would need all those elements (at least I hope we don't need the alphabetical index anymore!). Filters tend to take up the most space, so if you have a lot of them, rather have them on the left of the screen. For smaller screens, you can also opt for putting things behind an "advanced settings" button.
